Ipswich Magical Society: Wayne Dobson at Cambridge. April 2006
On April 25th Wayne Dobson gave a lecture to the Cambridge Pentacle Club. I had already seen Wayne perform live a few years ago and obviously I remember him from his heyday, but the chance to see him lecture in an intimate session was too good an opportunity to miss.

The format of the evening was very much show a trick and talk about it, but this was not just a dealer demonstration. This was an opportunity to gain an insight into what is undoubtedly a great magic mind.

Wayne started off with his tossed out deck routine. If anyone has seen Wayne perform they will know this is one of his hallmark effects. It had never been one of my favourite effects, but seeing how Wayne uses it as a way of getting the whole audience on his side makes it the perfect opener. Wayne's performance of this one effect and the things he had to say about it proved to me that Wayne has some great ideas to offer the magic world.

For obvious reasons much of the magic Wayne has on offer through his highly successful Dtriks company is very easy and almost self-working, but there is nothing wrong with that. Through many his years of experience, Wayne has a good eye for what works and what doesn't, and from the spectators point of view it's all just magic anyway. The tricks that Wayne sells allow the magician to totally concentrate on the most important thing. The presentation of the effect.

It wasn't just the magic though that made for a great evening. Wayne also very openly talked about himself and his life in magic. He was quick to put everyone at their ease and at times it felt like we were all just sitting around in Alan Maskell's living room for an afternoon tea, with a very special guest.

Hopefully one day we will get Wayne Dobson to lecture at the Ipswich Magical Society, or maybe even better one of our one day conventions.

If you get an opportunity to see him lecture - then don't think twice about grabbing the opportunity.
